Ida Sue Vaden Horn wrote a post on Facebook 1/18/2021. She is a high school friend of Susan Muns Parker, author of Raising Children with Your Heavenly Father.

Her post read: “What’s on my mind? August 1st, 1966. My water broke and I will soon be giving birth to my one and only child. On that day, Charles Whitman, an ex-marine, took his guns and ammunition up to the towers of The University of Texas and began shooting everyone in sight. My thoughts on that night as I was waiting on contractions to begin were: “I am bringing a child into a world that is so broken and I fear for his/her life”. The 1960’s were a period of civil unrest. Martin Luther King was assassinated as well as most of the leaders in the civil rights movement. John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Robert Kennedy was assassinated. Churches were burnt and hate was rampant in our America. I wanted this baby, but my heart was burdened on what was happening in America.

The next afternoon, God gave me a precious baby boy!! All was well in MY world. And now, tonight, 55 years later, I find myself feeling the same fears for children coming into this world. There is civil unrest, storming of our capital, threats to our elected officials and our democracy. How will the children born today navigate a world that is so divisive and filled with hate? How can we teach them that we are to love one another as God has loved us if we continue to criticize our neighbors and friends because we may have political differences? How can we “train up a child in the way he should go and he will not depart from it” if our example is one of hate instead of love? How can you. . . and how can I . . . make a difference in the world that our grandchildren will live in? Can we show them that love conquers hate; that God created us all equal and that OUR America was founded on these principles? I don’t know if it’s possible, but instead of feeling despair, I will pray for hope and faith that, even as grandparents, MAYBE we can make a difference in this world. We know that God is love. That’s all!”

After reading Ida Sue’s post, my first thought was, “This would make a perfect introduction for my long-awaited book.  I called her and she welcomed my using it to introduce Raising Children with Your Heavenly Father. The book provides parents hundreds of Scriptures to fulfill Proverbs 22:6. “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” May all parents strive to raise wise children who obey God’s Word and with a desire to pass their wisdom down to the next generation. Moses even reminded parents––“You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. . . You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk to them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way and when you lie down, and when you rise.” (Deut. 6:4-5,7)

We only have 18 years to teach our children everything they need to know. We cannot expect children to obey the Lord without knowing His Word. As they grow spiritually, they learn that their Heavenly Father is there for them 24/7.
